WA mining approvals take the next step

The reference group for the Western Australian Mining Development and Closure Proposal (MDCP) framework will provide input into draft guidance materials to support applicants developing a MDCP submission.

The WA Government first introduced the discussion paper in May. It aims to simplify the approval processes for the state’s mining sector by further streamlining regulation, reducing administrative burden and creating efficiencies around managing compliance.

The MDCP paper opened for public consultation in May and closed in August, and its reference group consists of participants from private entities, mining consultants and industry associations.

The newly rebranded Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) said this will ensure a wide range of perspectives are considered when developing the guidance material.

The first meeting focusing on the paper’s reference group was held in November, following a summon from DEMIRS for industry representatives to participate in MDCP activity such as industry workshops and meetings.

The first meeting covered MDCP content requirements and how duplication could be reduced through the mining approvals process.

DEMIRS resource and environmental compliance executive director Tyler Sujdovic said that stakeholder consultation is important in understanding the current needs of the mining industry.

“The department would like to thank everyone who expressed their interest in being part of the group,” he said. “The high level of interest is extremely encouraging, and we look forward to working with stakeholders to deliver an efficient and effective regulatory framework benefiting both industry and the department.”

A MDCP guidance document draft is expected to be available for external consultation in early 2024.
