Federal Minister for Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek has approved the final terms of reference for the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct’s strategic environmental assessment.
The Northern Territory Government is currently working with the Federal Government to transform Middle Arm – located on the Middle Arm Peninsula of Darwin Harbour – into a globally competitive and sustainable precinct that is largely powered by renewables and uses technology to achieve low-to-zero emissions.
The project’s strategic environmental assessment identifies what needs to be included in its environmental impact statement to ensure possible development impacts are correctly measured and assessed.
It also aims to deliver conservation outcomes and support appropriate development for the Middle Arm precinct over the next 50 years.
“Our Territory Government is focused on protecting the environment, creating green energy, boosting job numbers and growing our economy, all of which will be facilitated through the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct,” NT Minister for Territory Development Eva Lawler said.
“The terms of reference for the strategic environmental assessment have been formulation through consultation between environmental experts, community members and government bodies to ensure no stone goes unturned throughout the environmental assessment process.
“This precinct is an economic enabler which leverages the Territory’s significant abundance of natural resources and critical minerals which are key in the fight against climate change.”
Last month, critical minerals company Tivan secured a technology licence agreement with CSIRO to develop and commercialise the TIVAN+ critical minerals processing technology.
Alongside providing Tivan with an exclusive 20-year worldwide license for the use of CSIRO’s critical minerals processing intellectual property for vanadium recovery, the agreement also underscores the use of innovative technology at the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct as that’s where the technology will be developed.
