Metso locks in $90 million for Chile copper

Metso Zinnwald

Metso will deliver key concentrator equipment to a major copper mining project in Chile.

The deal is slated to be worth $EUR55 million ($90.8 million), with most of the products to be delivered within the company’s Planet Positive offering.

“Working together with the customer and the engineering company on an open collaborative model has been an extraordinary experience,” Metso mineral sales for South America vice president Fernando Samanez said.

“The model enhanced the efficiency of the engineering process and contributed to the alignment of all parties on the targets set by the end customer.

“This will be a benchmark to be followed in similar projects all over the world.”

Metso is set to deliver high-capacity Nordberg MP1250 secondary cone crushers, MF SeriesTM vibrating screens, and energy-efficient Vertimill VTM1500 regrinding mills.

For the flotation and separation circuit, Metso will supply multiple TankCell and ColumnCellTM flotation cells featuring several of the largest available 630 square metre TankCell units, as well as HCTTM High Compression tailing thickeners.

Metso will also deliver four MHC hydrocyclone clusters, of which two will be among the largest in the world.

The company also recently struck a deal to deliver a cooling solution for Aurubis Bulgaria’s flash smelting furnace rebuild.

The deal was locked in at $EUR10 million ($16.5 million) for the supply of equipment to the rebuild project, which is located in the Zlatitsa-Pirdop Valley in Bulgaria.

“Metso’s long and close partnership with Aurubis Bulgaria AD provides a thorough understanding between the companies and enables us to deliver the optimal furnace integrity solution to meet the customer’s needs in the best possible manner,” Metso smelting business line vice president Jyrki Makkonen said.

Metso will deliver its new Outotec cooling elements and related advisory services to the project, which has been using a Outotec flash smelting furnace since 1987.
